Glasgow Green will welcome 225 Pipe Bands from 17 countries when the World Pipe Band Championships are staged there next month. The Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association has received entries from all over the world for the event which will feature bands from Brazil and Mexico when it is held on August 17 and 18 2013.
The Worlds has been associated with Glasgow for more than 60 years but this is the first time in the recent history of the event that it has been staged over 2 days. The decision to expand the World Pipe Band Championships is a reflection of its growing popularity. Last year the Worlds attracted crowds of over 35,000.
Followers of pipe bands who couldn’t make the journey to Glasgow will be able to watch the competition wherever they are with both days being streamed live. Saturday’s coverage will be available via www.theworlds.co.uk/watchlive
and Sunday’s coverage will be live at www.bbc.co.uk/worlds
Glasgow will host the worlds biggest ever week of piping and traditional music from 11-18th August. Piping Live! Glasgow International Piping Festival will celebrate its 10th birthday with new venues and a week long programme of exciting performances, workshops and concerts. Tickets for Piping Live! are on sale now. For more information about both events please go to www.peoplemakeglasgow.com/piping
Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band from Belfast will battle to retain their 2011 and 2012 World Champions titles against bands from around the world. As well as enjoying the bands spectators can see Highland Dancing, Highland Games, great food and drink and a huge family fun zone. Sunday will also see a traditional music tent added to the event for the first time.
Tickets can be bought for the whole weekend or for individual days with the finals of the Grade 1 competition on the Sunday already proving particularly popular. With less than a month to go to the event, there are fewer than 200 Grade 1 tickets left. Family weekend tickets booked in advance for 2 adults and 3 children cost £40 while family day tickets are £25. Full ticket information and booking details can be found at www.theworlds.co.uk
Ian Embelton, the Chief Executive of The Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association said: “We took the decision to change to a two day event after extensive consultation with bands and they have responded with a huge entry. I am particularly looking forward to welcoming bands from Brazil and Mexico who will undoubtedly be one of the many highlights of The Worlds. There is nothing quite like the sights and sounds of Glasgow Green during The World Pipe Band Championships and this year could be the best yet.”
The World Pipe Band Championships is organised by Glasgow Life on behalf of The Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association and Glasgow City Council and is supported by Glasgow City Marketing Bureau and EventScotland.
