Double world champ Becky James unveiled as JTWC ambassador

05/06/2013
Double world champion track cyclist Becky James was today unveiled as a 2013 Juniors Track World Championships JTWC ambassador at the iconic Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow’s £113million Emirates Arena.

The 2013 JTWC comes to the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome between Wednesday 7 and Sunday 11 August and will feature some of the very young track cyclists from across the world. Riders will go for gold in a range of events including the team sprint, keirin, individual pursuit, omnium, sprint, madison, points race, team pursuit, scratch race and various time trials over five days of world-class action. Glasgow joins an elite list of JTWC host cities that includes Los Angeles, Cape Town and Moscow.

Some of the world’s top track cyclists including the golden girl of British cycling, Becky James, started on the road to glory at previous JTWC. James, who won gold in both the sprint and keirin at the 2009 JTWC, became the first British woman to win four medals at Track World Championship (TWC) level earlier this year. James took gold in the sprint and keirin as well as bronze in the 500m time trial and team sprint. She made her debut at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in November last year where she won gold in the team sprint.

James said: “The Junior Track World Championships is where the next generation of track cyclists will make their name and it is fantastic that they will be doing that at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome. The quality of rider will be exceptionally high and the event will give fans the chance to see the Olympic, World and Commonwealth champions of tomorrow in action.

“November’s World Cup at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome was an incredible experience. It was fantastic to compete in front of such a passionate home crowd and the atmosphere will be the same at the Juniors Track World Championships. The people of Glasgow and Scotland love sport and I am sure they will again show their support for all the riders.

“Events such as this can inspire a generation and who knows in a few years time we may well be seeing a champion who started on the road to success at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome.”

The JTWC is delivered in partnership between Glasgow Life on behalf of Glasgow City Council, Scottish Cycling and British Cycling with support from EventScotland.
