For the first time ever George Square will host a free family party on New Year’s Day. The event, which is being supported by Glasgow Warriors and Clyde 1, will see the Square turned into a fan zone for rugby supporters travelling to Firhill Stadium for the second leg of the 1872 Cup clash between Glasgow Warriors and Edinburgh Rugby.
Top-flight players will join fans and Clyde 1 presenter Gavin Pearson for what promises to be a day of top-class entertainment both on and off the field. As well as photograph and autograph signing sessions with players, Glasgow Warriors’ hugely popular mascot ‘Clyde Coo’ will also be making an appearance to entertain younger fans.
As well as the rugby-themed entertainment revellers can feast on traditional Scottish produce, while children can enjoy a multitude of family-friendly activities, as the city celebrates the promise of a New Year in style. The festivities run between 12 noon and 6pm. New Year’s Day will also see the start of a special offer that will give skaters the opportunity to enjoy half-price sessions at Glasgow on Ice on 1, 2 and 3 January.
On Monday 2 January it will fun and games all the way in George Square. Kids and big kids will be able to enjoy Cadbury’s Spots v Stripes Olympics themed activities as well as giant board games including jenga, connect 4 and snakes and ladders. In addition there will also be table tennis, wii consoles and entertainment on the stage including performances from entrants of this year’s City Sounds music talent competition. The fun gets underway at 12 noon and ends at 8pm.
Happy New You! will draw to a close on Tuesday 3 January with a Fit For Life day hosted by the Glasgow Club – Scotland’s leisure and fitness network. Personal trainers and instructors from the Glasgow Club will be giving bootcamp and fitness-class demonstrations throughout the day and there will be an opportunity for people to take part in a range of fitness tests.
