Merchant City Festival getting local organisations involved

17/12/2013

The Merchant City Festival 2013 attracted a record-breaking audience of 100,000 attendances and generated almost £1million in economic output in the Merchant City.  Local organisations are being invited to apply for the ‘Get Involved’ Fund in 2014.

The festival aims to promote the area and its businesses, by showcasing the best of what the Merchant City has to offer, increasing footfall and boosting the local economy.  In 2014, as part of the city wide Festival 2014 celebrations, the Merchant City Festival will be one of the key ‘live zones’ for the 11 days of the Commonwealth Games, providing a place for visitors and spectators to experience the great cultural offer that makes the Merchant City unique.

The Live Zones at Merchant City, Glasgow Green, the refurbished Kelvingrove Bandstand and other locations across the city will transform Glasgow from 19th July to 3rd August.  An invigorating mix of entertainment, culture and enjoyment will fill the streets, spaces and stages of the host city, showing Glasgow, Scotland and the Commonwealth at their best.

The Merchant City is widely acknowledged as the cultural centre of Glasgow, and as such is one of the most vibrant, cutting-edge cultural hubs in the UK and increasingly Europe.  It is home to dozens of galleries and arts venues such as Trongate 103 and The Briggait.  It’s also home to a great wealth of other businesses – shops, hotels, fine restaurants and bars.  These organisations and all others in the area are invited to access the Get Involved Fund 2014.

The Get Involved Fund will support events across a range of programming strands, including street arts, music, theatre, food and drink, fashion and design and children and families.  The event must be specially programmed for the Festival and take place during the Festival.  Organisations can apply for up to £1000.  Applications will be assessed by representatives of the Merchant City Festival Committee on the basis of: Relevance to the Festival programme, Quality and Innovation.

Application forms are available at www.merchantcityfestival.com  .  Entries must be submitted by 3rd February 2014.  In 2013 the fund was highly competitive with 30 organisations, business and individuals applying, and 17 were being awarded grants totaling £8000
