Scottish Swimming Championships return to Tollcross

04/06/2013
Scottish swimmers will make a welcome return to Tollcross International Swimming Centre for the Scottish Gas National Open Swimming Championships  from 13 – 16 June to test the waters ahead of next year’s Commonwealth Games.

It’s been two years since Scottish Swimming last held a National Championship at the venue, and following a £13.8m refurbishment, the main pool now boasts an extra 1000 seats, which will help create an electric atmosphere as the swimmers battle it out for medal glory. A new six-lane 50m warm up pool has also been created at Tollcross International Swimming Centre ahead of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Amongst those registered to compete are Commonwealth Games Champions Caitlin McClatchey, Hannah Miley and Robbie Renwick, who will use the meet as final race practice ahead of the World Championships Trials in Sheffield later this month.

Speaking ahead of the Scottish Gas National Open Championships, Forbes Dunlop, Scottish Swimming’s Chief Executive Officer said: “Returning to Tollcross International Swimming Centre this month will give added incentive to our athletes to perform well and give them a taste of what could be in a little over 13 months’ time.

“I’m looking forward to and would encourage as many people as possible to come down to the Scottish Gas National Open Championships and witness some of Scotland’s best swimmers in action at a Games venue ahead of a busy summer of World, European and National Events.”

Kevin Roxburgh, Managing Director of Scottish Gas, is excited about the partnership Scottish Gas and Scottish Swimming have formed for National Events and commented,

“Scottish Gas is proud of the partnership we have forged with Scottish Swimming, supporting swimmers of all levels from beginners to elite athletes. As a business we are passionate about supporting our people and our customers to invest in their wellbeing. Swimming is a great way to keep fit, relieve stress and have fun with your family. That is why it is wonderful to see so many bright young Scottish talents blazing a trail towards the Commonwealth Games and showing that an active childhood can lead to great achievements.”

Chair of Glasgow Life and the Executive Member for the Commonwealth Games, Councillor Archie Graham, said: “We are delighted that the Scottish Gas National Open Swimming Championships is returning home to Tollcross International Swimming Centre. It will be the first chance local people will have to see some of the best swimmers in the world go for gold in the very same venue that will host the swimming competition at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. The wait is over – international swimming is back at Tollcross.”

The competition will run over four days from 13th – 16th June 2013, with ticket prices starting from as little as £3.
