Super Gyms & Additional Services for 2014 Games Time Celebrations

11/12/2013

Scotland's largest network of health and fitness facilities is to be boosted with an expansion of services as a result of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The Glasgow Club has already benefitted from the build-up to the Games with some £200 million of investment in new and refurbished facilities, such as the £113 million Emirates Arena, incorporating the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, the Glasgow National Hockey Centre and a major refurbishment of the Tollcross International Swimming Centre. Other centres, including the Scotstoun Sports Campus have benefitted from new gym facilities and six new squash courts. In each of the Glasgow Club's network of 25 facilities, investment has led to the latest gym equipment and fitness classes on offer.

For the first time in any Commonwealth or Olympic Games, the venues have been opened and used by local people, long before they are handed over to the elite athletes. As the city looks to welcome the world in 2014, an extensive programme has been developed to provide alternative facilities as venues are prepared for the Commonwealth Games.

Two new Super Gyms will be opened, with the first at Glasgow Club Gorbals being launched in January 2014, with another soon to follow at Glasgow Club Bellahouston in June 2014. The gyms will boast significantly more Technogym equipment to ensure that customers can stay active and healthy while some Glasgow Club facilities are handed over to Glasgow 2014. Fitness classes will be moved to locations close to the facilities most affected, allowing customers to continue with their favourite exercise regime and instructors.

Councillor Archie Graham, the Chair of Glasgow Life and the Executive Member for the Commonwealth Games at Glasgow City Council, said: "The Glasgow Club is Scotland's biggest and best health and fitness network and right across the city, we've seen huge levels of investment across all of our facilities. There's already been a lasting legacy from the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games in that the people of Glasgow have been able to enjoy new and refurbished facilities, long before the elite athletes arrive.

"We have put in place an extensive programme that means for the period that some of our facilities are handed over to the Games, our customers will still be able to locally access gym facilities and all of their favourite fitness classes. In the last four years, attendances across our sports facilities has increased by around 40 per cent and that is in no small measure thanks to the significant investment not only in our buildings, but right across the Glasgow Club offer."

Last year, there were a record 6.3 million attendances across Glasgow Club facilities, up 12 per cent on the previous year. There are currently 32,000 members of the Glasgow Club, again a record.

Full details of the programme which will be in place for the Commonwealth Games will be communicated across sites and online, as well as direct communication with customers. Other arrangements will be in place for sports classes, coaching programmes and for those with regular lets.

Cllr Graham added: "The Games really will put the city on the map and our fantastic facilities, owned and used by local people, will be in the spotlight on a global scale."

Games Time facilities will be operated by Glasgow 2014, with staff from Glasgow Life manning the venues. Work will take place to ensure venues are at competition standard and to provide security and structural overlays before being handed back to the city at the close of the Games.
