Winter Gardens set for £140,000 improvement works

Improvement works totalling £140,000 are set to be carried out Winter Gardens ahead of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

A series of high level glazing repairs will result in the People’s Palace and Winter Gardens being temporarily closed between Monday – Friday, from Tuesday 1 October until mid November weather permitting. The People’s Palace will be closed on Monday 30 September, in accordance with normal opening hours.

The works will be weather dependant and it is hoped that the facilities can open as normal at the weekends during the course of the works although this will depend on progress being made Monday to Friday.

Councillor Alistair Watson, executive member for Land & Environmental Service, said: “The Winter Gardens are a much loved part of Glasgow and we are dedicated to improving the facility.

“The significant investment we’re putting in will prepare the Winter Gardens for the year of the Commonwealth Games in 2014.

“In order to carry out the works as quickly as possible and minimise disruption, the People’s Palace and Winter Gardens will be closed during the week and reopen at weekends.

“As always, we need to bear in mind the Scottish weather. Should works fall behind due to unfavourable weather conditions there maybe a requirement to work weekends and the potential resultant short notice closure. Obviously, all reasonable steps will be taken to avoid this.”
