Glasgow’s Active Ageing Week 2012
4 – 12 June
CONCERTS - PERFORMANCES - LIVE MUSIC - FAMILY TREE
CREATIVE WORKSHOPS - ACTIVITY SESSIONS - AND MUCH MORE
Glasgow is unique in the UK with this event and in its ongoing commitment to help older adults get active, stay active, maintain both physical and mental health, independence and a good social life. We all know that being active is important as we age, but perhaps cannot find the time, the energy or the drive to seek out different ways to keep active. Some of my own research has shown that age does not matter, even 90 year olds can rejuvenate 20 years of lost strength in just 12 weeks of strengthening exercise.New research has shown that avoiding long periods of sitting, even just getting up, walking around the room and sitting down again, can make a huge difference to health – any activity is good activity!
Active Ageing Week focuses our attention on the fun and exciting opportunities that exist in and around Glasgow. From creative events to exercise classes and fitness MOTs, this week highlights some of the activities you could try, bring a friend to, or even enthuse you to help start up something new in your area. The benefits of being active, from sleeping better, having more energy, enjoying your food more, better concentration, more confidence (growing bolder!) and of course, better health will also be highlighted at the 8th World Congress on Active Ageing, hosted at the SECC in August. Why not come along to this event and have a taste of a wide variety of different activity options, meet like-minded people and grill a few experts!
