History of the Mela

From Bhangra to Bollywood

The history of Mela

Based on the traditions of the Indian sub-continent the O2 Glasgow Mela has evolved to become an outdoor spectacular that allows everyone the chance to experience and celebrate different cultures. Over the years visitors have been entertained and enthralled by music, dance and interactive arts from across the globe – from Bhangra to Bollywood and all points in between!

A new beginning in 1990

Originally created in 1990 as part of Glasgow’s celebrations as European City of Culture, the event is now one of the largest in the country. The name of the event ‘Mela’ has different meanings to different people. Originating from Sanskrit and meaning ‘to meet’ the concept of Mela has developed across the world to represent a coming together of many peoples, from varied cultures, to celebrate their shared diversity.

Bigger and better in 2011

As we celebrate our 21st year in 2011, the event expands to two days with even more live music and entertainment for all ages and cultures. We will be announcing some of our big names acts very soon but for the latest behind the scenes updates join our online community on facebook!

Check out our 2010 event gallery to see what you might have missed out on last year and to get a flavour of what we have in store this summer.

We will see you in June!
