Cancer Support Scotland

Macmillan @ Glasgow Libraries is working in partnership with Cancer Support Scotland, whose base is The Calman Cancer Support Centre located within the grounds of Gartnavel Hospital.

This partnership provides free Complementary Therapies and Talking Therapy (Counselling) within library venues across Glasgow, ensuring that anyone affected by Cancer can receive the support they need within their local community.

Our volunteers within the library services can support service users to access Complementary Therapy and/or Talking Therapy (Counselling) appointments.

Complementary Therapies

Complementary therapies have become increasingly more popular as a means of improving health and relieving stress. This holistic approach aims to ease the emotional, mental and physical effects cancer may have on patients and their families, friends and carers.

Complementary therapies are provided by fully qualified and trained therapists within several of the library venues across Glasgow, and are currently able to offer:
  • Reflexology
  • Aromatherapy massage
  • Indian head massage
  • Facial reflexology
  • Reiki
Service users can access up to 6 sessions of complementary therapies.
The therapist will take a brief medical history on the initial appointment and create a therapy programme specially tailored to suit the individual needs.

It will not always be possible to offer the service user their choice of complementary therapy, for example if there are potential contraindications due to treatment.

Talking Therapy (Counselling)

“I was feeling quite isolated and alone, but the service really helped. Before that I was feeling quite low. I went through depression and they put me in touch with a counsellor. They were fantastic to talk to.” Frances

Talking Therapy (Counselling) is provided by fully qualified and trained counsellors within several of the library venues across Glasgow.

The confidential sessions take place on a one-to-one basis and can cover such issues as:
  • Anxiety
  • Bereavement
  • Family concerns
  • Living with secondary cancer
  • Stress
  • Work-related concerns

Regular appointments can be made until you find the right time to move forward.

These services are free and confidential.
