Information & Support Volunteer
When I became unemployed, finding another job was very difficult and sometimes disheartening. I decided to volunteer in the hope I would find something challenging and interesting to fill my time.
Finding a role was easy when I joined Volunteer Scotland and received their e-newsletter which contained all the latest news and opportunities. I applied to Macmillan @ Glasgow Libraries as an information and support volunteer and started in August 2012.
I have found the training I received really important in helping me understand the issues faced by people affected by cancer. This has given me the confidence to speak to service users about their needs and fears and direct them to the best services that are available to them. I also learned that I can be a good listener when I put my mind to it!
Through volunteering with Macmillan @ Glasgow Libraries I have met a lot of amazing people and I’ve completely changed my focus in my job search!
I would like to work in the voluntary sector and hope that this experience will help me fulfil this goal. In the coming months I am about to begin fundraising with Macmillan and I have a few ideas for events that I hope to organise. So whilst I may be unemployed at the moment, I can say that I'm certainly not out of work!
