Library Membership Terms and Conditions

Joining the Library

Membership of Glasgow Libraries is free and open to all. You can join at any one of our venues by completing a membership application form either online or in person.  If you are using the online application form, you will be issued with a temporary membership number which will allow you to use our online services and reserve books.*

You will then need to visit one of our libraries, bringing along identification that contains proof of your address such as a driving license, council tax or utility bill.  You will then be issued with your full library membership card.

There are no age restrictions in becoming a library member, however if you are aged under 14 years, you will need a parent or carer’s signature on the application form and identification should be provided by the person signing the form.

*A full membership card is required to borrow eBooks, Audiobooks and eMagazines.

Membership Conditions

Young people aged under 14 years, including Young Scot and Kidz Card holders, can borrow:

  • Up to 6 books for 4 weeks

Adults, including young people aged between 14 – 18 years can borrow:

  • Up to 12 books for 4 weeks

*Charges apply for these items, however concessionary discounts and special offers maybe available. Please ask staff for details.

You can renew most items in person, by telephone or online, except where there is a waiting list for the item.

If the item you are looking for is not available in your branch, you may reserve it free of charge online or at any library.

In addition, if the item you are looking for is not available within Glasgow Libraries it may still be possible to obtain a copy through a ‘Borrower’s Suggestion for Purchase’.

Finally the Inter Library Loan Service, for which there is a charge, can also be used to obtain items from other library authorities.

  • To return items on time. You may be charged for items which are returned late.
  • To be responsible for all items which are borrowed on your card. You may be charged for items which are lost or damaged.
  • Your library card can only be used by the registered card holder and not by anyone else.
