The Family History Centre at The Mitchell Library holds Directories for Glasgow and other Scottish locations.
There are Glasgow Directories for almost every year from 1783 until 1978, with most years covered in between. The Mitchell holds a complete set of these apart from some gaps in the early years.
Directories typically include:
Alphabetical lists of residents
Trades section (added from 1833)
Streets section (added from 1845)
Not every person was included as directory entries were usually restricted to professional and business people.
Post Office Directories are available from 1828 to 1978/79.
Also available are Kelly’s Directories of Glasgow from 1924 until 1974.
Telephone books and yellow pages are another useful resource for family historians. Glasgow editions are available in The Mitchell Library - with some gaps -from 1892 and 1929 respectively.
The Mitchell has directories for many other Scottish towns, including an almost complete set for Edinburgh. These are available in the Family History Centre, as are general directories for Scotland including:
- Pigot’s/Slater’s Directories 1821 - 1915 (imp)
- County Directory of Scotland 1862 - 1912 (imp)
- MacDonald’s Scottish Directory 1884 - 1973 (imp)
