North British Locomotive Company

The North British Locomotive Company (NBL) Collection is the photographic archive of one of the most famous companies of locomotive builders in Britain.  The NBL was formed in 1903 by the amalgamation of 3 Glasgow engineering companies; this merger created the largest locomotive building company in Europe.

The Collection

After the company went into liquidation in 1962, the photographic records were deposited in The Mitchell Library. This became the North British Locomotive Collection, consisting of about 9,000 glass negatives plus approximately 6,500 photographic prints. The standard image on both glass negative and print is of a recently completed locomotive photographed in front of the workshop.

Other photographs in the collection show locomotives being transported along city streets en route to Glasgow Docks, NBL products being loaded on to ships and company employees, both at work and leisure.

Glasgow Libraries Reprographics Service can supply quality prints from the NBL Collection.

A selection of photographs from the Collection can be viewed on SCRAN.
