Celebrating 100 Years of The Mitchell Library at Charing Cross
As part of our celebrations of 100 Years at Charing Cross we would like you to share your memories of this world famous building.
"I worked for a short time in The Mitchell in 1946.One evening I was approached by a lady who said “Son, I had an awfy good book oot the last time I was in. I don’t know the name of it or who wrote it but it was a green book and you went that way (pointing to the right ) to get it." I had to point out sympathetically that as we had over six hundred thousand books in the library, I needed a little more detail to be able to help!"

"As an adopted Glaswegian, The LIbrary is one of the places which make it such a cultural and beautiful city. And my reason for staying!"
Rosemary Gibbs
"I thought of my mother-in-law whowas a librarian at The Mitchell some time ago. Logie Baird was a favourite client."
Joan Young.
"My 10 years in Glasgow Libraries gave me a terrific grounding that took me to prison (as librarian!) and 5 years in Saudi Arabia .
Many of my skills were learned within The Mitchell, but it was not just the building it was the people who worked there that set me on my way to do many great things in my career.
I have the fondest memories of my years in The Mitchell & I trust after I am gone people will still cherish the place."
Hugh Beattie
"In the 40s my mother and father went to the SNO at St Andrew's Halls and my father visited The Mitchell regularly. Wonderful exhibition."
Joyce Knox
