Elder Park Library is currently closed for refurbishment. Work started in August 2022.

In November 2020, we carried out a community consultation. The aim was to gather as many views as possible to help us create a library and community hub that meets the future needs of the local community.

We were delighted that 882 people completed our online survey and a summary of the key survey results are available here.

A copy of the full survey results can be viewed online here:

Considerable investment of nearly £4m has been committed to the restoration of Elder Park Library, which will significantly improve the fabric of the building and deliver a modern, fit-for-purpose library that best serves the needs of the community.

Our contractor, City Building Glasgow, is carrying out a programme of internal and external improvement works, which will ensure the library is structurally sound and sustainable for the future.

The programme of works includes a complete refurbishment of the interior layout, which is improving accessibility for users and introducing a new community hall and increased bookable space; further developing Elder Park as a highly-valued community hub.

Replacing the heating systems with more energy-efficient boilers and upgrading the electrical systems including new LED lighting will significantly reduce the library’s carbon footprint. A new fire alarm and security system are being installed and a full electrical rewiring is being carried out. The revitalised building will provide better links to the park, to help maximise use.

We will provide an update on our plans for reopening Elder Park Library soon.

Further updates on our progress will appear on this page and via Glasgow Life Libraries Facebook and Twitter pages.

Remember that while we are closed you can still access our e-library online, links below:

This is a hugely enjoyable ghost story, atmospheric and chilling. It is a story about an attempt in 1935 by five Englishmen to climb Kangchenjunga, a Himalyan mountain more deadly than Everest. A rucksack belonging to a dead mountaineer appears to follow them. Is it an optical illusion? Is someone menacing the group? The ice ‘creaking and groaning’ are vividly described. This is a ghost story to chill and thrill, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Dark Matter by the same author is also excellent.

Karyl, Elder Park Library.

The library was gifted to Govan by Mrs Isabella Elder and opened by Andrew Carnegie in 1903.

Mrs Elder donated £10,000 to meet the cost of building, insisting that the library must open on Sundays.
