Adult Learning

Talks, tours, classes and resources for Adult Learning tutors

Glasgow Museums provides different kinds of learning opportunities across ten museum sites. Adults take up learning for a whole range of reasons – to better support their children with schoolwork, to improve employment prospects or to learn and discover new skills in retirement. Taking part in adult learning can be as much about developing confidence and self-esteem, socialising and meeting new people as it is about gaining qualifications.

Our museums and their wonderful collections are the starting point for various opportunities including:

Talks and Tours:

Why not take a tour of GMRC? We offer general tours plus specialist and themed tours. Previous tour topics have included Ship Models, Highlights of the Art Collection and Georgian Glasgow. See our What’s On guide for details of forthcoming tours at GMRC. You’ll also find talks and tours at any other venues listed here

Art Classes – we currently offer:

  • Relax and Create classes at St Mungo Museum on Sunday afternoons – these informal classes allow you to get creative and try new crafts and techniques. For forthcoming sessions please call 0141 276 1625 or e-mail These classes are free but must be booked in advance.
  • New artist-led classes at GoMA allowing you to develop your creative skills further using quality materials.  All materials and cost of firing is included in the price. For forthcoming sessions check our What's On guide or contact the venue on 0141 287 3050.
Adult learning group tutors looking to bring a group of learners to GMRC can download a copy of our resource pack here. It contains information on the collections available there and how to use them with groups.

Temporary Exhibitions – these exhibitions provide an opportunity to see something not normally on display in our venues. They cover a range of themes and may showcase our own collections or those on tour from another organisation. See our What’s On Guide for details of current exhibitions, which are listed first under each museum. Many of these exhibitions also have talks and events connected to them.

On a more formal level our collection can be used as a stimulus and source material for developing problem-solving skills, ICT, communication and numeracy skills and for ESOL (English as a secondary other language).

Our museums can provide fantastic learning opportunities for any adult learning groups. Download our online resources to guide groups and adult learning tutors on the choices available to them to get the most out of their museum engagement.
