Scottish Prison Service
Barlinnie Prison is situated on the outskirts of Glasgow but still close to the busiest courts in Scotland and close to population centres and public transport routes that allow ease of access for family visits.
Barlinnie is Scotland's largest, most complex penal establishment and holds all categories of prisoners. However, its main purpose is to hold remand and short term prisoners sent by the West of Scotland courts. Find out more
Motherwell College provides an offender learning and skills service in 7 of 14 public sector prisons including HMP Barlinnie.
Motherwell College aims to provide a learning and skills service which offers offenders a second chance, and equips them with the skills and knowledge required to reintegrate into society and move into employment and training.
The Learning Centres aim to:
• Provide a supportive learning environment;
• Engage the maximum possible number of students;
• Improve students' skills and enable them to achieve their potential;
• Increase students' self esteem, self respect and respect for others.
All delivery is subject to inspection by Her Majesty’s Inspector of Education (HMIe) under subcontract to Her Majesty’s Inspector of Prisons (HMIP).
Families Outside is the only national charity in Scotland that works solely to support the families of people involved in the criminal justice system. The organisation works to mitigate the effects of imprisonment on children and families – and consequently to reduce the likelihood of reoffending – through support and information for families and for the people who work with them.
