Glasgow Museums has a substantial collection of costume and textiles. Up to now the collection has been stored in 10 locations across four different venues.
The collection has around 17,500 objects, dating from 1100 to the present.
The Costume and Textiles collection is mostly stored in archive boxes. The boxes are beginning to deteriorate and need to be replaced and upgraded.
Some textiles are rolled, but the majority of them are on rollers that are the wrong size. They need to be re-rolled onto the correct size prior to storage.
The project was awarded funding by Museums Galleries Scotland in 2010/11. It will allow us to unite the collection for the first time (with the exception of items at the Burrell Collection) under one roof, in Glasgow Museums Resource Centre (GMRC).
GMRC is Glasgow Museums publically-accessible store. The collection is housed in the newest part of the store, in POD 17.
The funding also allows us to choose the most appropriate and efficient storage options for the space. This includes a double-height mobile storage system with integrated mezzanine.
This will increase accessibly for staff, students and visitors.
