The Essence of Beauty: 500 Years of Italian Art was at Kelvingrove from 6 April - 12 August 2012.
Kelvingrove’s exhibition showcased the best of Glasgow Museums’ wonderful collection of Italian art and featured several works which had not been on public display for many years.
The exhibition also celebrated the launch of our first fully illustrated catalogue of Italian paintings, researched and written by Professor Peter Humfrey of the University of St Andrews. This catalogue is available to buy in Glasgow Museums shops.
The exhibition included 40 fine paintings, dating from the late 14th to the 19th centuries, displayed in chronolgoical order.
It also included decorated arms and armour, fine sculpture, wonderful Venetian glass and fine ceramics, all of which offered a fascinating insight into the broader historical and artistic context of the paintings.
All exhibits, including the paintings’ frames, were specially conserved in preparation for their moment in the spotlight.
