The aims of the Kelvingrove New Century Project were to:

- Increase the amount of display space by 35% and the number of objects on display by 50%
- Increase the number of visitors by 26% (350,000 in total) on a sustainable, long-term basis, including repeat attendance by existing visitors, and recruitment of new visitors from target groups, such as young people, people living in poverty, and members of ethnic minority communities
- Achieve substantial and measurable improvement in the quantity and quality of formal educational provision and ensure the museum becomes a vital link in making Glasgow a Learning City
- Meet the City’s economic regeneration objectives by being launched worldwide as a major tourist destination
- Install displays that use a flexible intellectual framework and display system that is able to evolve with changing public interests and reduce the need for future capital investment
- Greatly improve amenities (cafés, shops, toilets) in order to enhance Kelvingrove’s role as a social space, and to meet international standards
- Improve access and circulation within the building.
