Adjustments had been made over the years to address changing tastes and theories of display and interpretation.
But the nature and layout of the building were hindrances that could not be easily overcome.
We also realized that the displays did not always reflect the importance of the world-class collections.
Traditionally, displays were done using the criteria of chronology or provenance. We wanted to put displays into context. But our curators and designers were hampered by the restrictions of the layout of the building and the nature of the display cases.
