Dali painting travels to US for high profile loan
One of Glasgow Museums’ most significant paintings is to be loaned to the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, USA from the end of June 2010.
Salvador Dali’s famous Christ of St John of the Cross was taken off display on 28 June, in preparation for its journey across the Atlantic. It will be on display in Atlanta from 7 August 2010 until 9 January 2011, as part of the exhibition Dali: The Late Work.
The High Museum of Art is one of the most important cultural institutions in the United States and the painting will be at the centre of this major new exhibition. The exhibition will focus on Dali’s work after 1940 and is built around a core of significant oil paintings loaned from other American and international museums, including The Persistence of Memory, featuring the famous melting watch.
The loan places Glasgow on the world's cultural stage
In addition to placing Glasgow firmly on the world’s cultural stage, the exhibition will provide a new context for the interpretation of Christ of St John of the Cross, widely acknowledged as Dali’s masterpiece and the crown jewel in this exciting new exhibition.
Glasgow Museums is delighted to be working with the High Museum of Art and look forward to developing a lasting relationship that will be equally beneficial to both parties.
The painting will return to Kelvingrove in February 2011 and Glasgow Museums is currently considering various options for its redisplay and interpretation.
