The Dutch and Religion

Interior of St Bavo's, Haarlem with a Catholic Baptism, Pieter Jansz Saenredam (1597-1665, Dutch) 1633

The Netherlands was a divided place during the early seventeenth century.

It became divided along religious as well as political lines between the North (largely Protestant) and the South (Catholic).

This affected the use and appearance of both Dutch churches and Dutch religious paintings.
