The Vikings are typically portrayed as a violent people.
They are described as raiders who caused chaos across Western Europe in the 8th, 9th and 10th centuries AD.
This display shows that this is not the whole story.
The evidence shows that the Vikings also settled here.
They:
- built houses
- developed technologies
- farmed the land
- mixed with the indigenous population, and
- led a peaceful family existence.
In this story we examine the evidence from the excavation of a Viking house at Drimore in South Uist.
And we look at the material culture of the period to try and understand what life was like for the people who lived here.
