To ensure life after death, the ancient Egyptians mummified and buried their dead in elaborate tombs.
Along with the dead were included objects for use in the afterlife.
The rediscovery of tombs by archaeologists has indeed granted their occupants eternal life. It has ensured the survival of their names, bodies and possessions into the modern world.
The objects in this story give an understanding of the beliefs and processes that ensured the passage of ancient Egyptians from death, through:
- mummification and burial
- to rebirth, and
- the receiving of offerings in the afterlife.
They show that the true treasure discovered in a tomb is the information that is preserved about the past.
