Furniture in Focus - the decorated surface

Folding screen, George Logan (1866-1939); Jessie Marion King (1875–1949); Wylie & Lochhead (furniture makers); 1902, walnut, silver, mother-of-pearl, turquoise, red amethyst, stone, watercolour, ink, 1721mm x 1372mm

Three pieces of furniture from three very different designers. They had one common goal: to use materials and pattern imaginatively when decorating the surface of an object.

This story examines and explores the design, materials and craftsmanship to be found in the detail of three very different pieces of furniture. They were made between 1895 and 1910 and are in the permanent collection.

We hope the story will make you stop and think about the thought, time and skills that have gone into making these sumptuously-decorated and beautiful objects.

The objects are:

  • A walnut folding screen designed by George Logan and it has applied decoration of silver, mother of pearl, turquoise, red amethyst, white stone, leather, vellum and glass.  The screen was made by cabinetmakers Wylie and Lochhead, Glasgow, 1902. (The screen is pictured above.)

  • A screen designed and embroidered by Eliza Kerr, about 1910 - a wooden folding screen with panels of linen and silk needlework.

  • A chair by Carlo Bugatti, Italy, about 1895.  It is constructed from wood and animal skin and decorated with copper, copper alloy, bone, wood stain, shellac, dye and silk.
