Fossil Reptiles from Elgin

Rib bones of reptile, Stagonolepis

This is the story of Elgin’s Fossil Reptiles and the geologists who discovered them.

These fossils provide valuable evidence about the evolution of this animal group. A group that also includes dinosaurs and crocodiles.

The discoveries show us that huge reptiles used to live in the Elgin area. One of these reptiles was Stagonolepis.

Stagonolepis was used by ‘Darwin’s Bulldog’ TH Huxley as evidence to support the new idea of Evolution.

Modern-day fossil hunters continue to learn about Elgin’s fossil reptiles.
