Glasgow and the Wild West

Glasgow Stories

Glasgow has always had a fascination with the Wild West.

Most people think that our knowledge of the American West originated with the coming of film.

Cowboy and Indian films were very popular in Glasgow, which was known as Cinema City.

But this fascination with the Wild West actually dates from the emigration of Scots to North America in earlier times.

The Scott Journal is an example of a Scots family emigrating to the USA in the 1860s. Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show visited Glasgow in 1892.

This love of the Wild West continues to-day in the form of Country and Western music festivals and line dancing classes.

This story offers us an insight into one facet of our West of Scotland culture.
