Glasgow Boys Watercolours on display now
Until April 2012, visitors to Kelvingrove can enjoy a display of watercolours by members of the Glasgow Boys, the group that are the subject of a new permanent gallery at Kelvingrove. This separate, smaller display, which is open now in the Fragile Art gallery, showcases some of the outstanding works on paper produced by some of the Boys including Arthur Melville, generally considered the most inspirational watercolour painter in the group.
These pieces are very delicate and cannot be on public display for longer than a few months at a time – so make sure you see them while you can!
Glasgow Girls display
Another recent change at Kelvingrove is a new display of Glasgow Girls paintings. The group, who came together in the 1890s, are best known for their work in the decorative arts, such as embroidery, metalwork, glass painting, ceramics and book illustration. But there were also some fine painters in the Glasgow Girls.
Our new display showcases selected examples including paintings by Bessie MacNicol and Norah Neilson Gray (considered the best painters of the group), and the much-loved illustrator Jessie M King.
