3 Minute Talk
By David
I support a football team called Glasgow Rangers. I started supporting Rangers because it was a family tradition. I have supported this team for about 22 years. When my Dad started taking me to games and I live about 15 minutes away from the stadium.
Rangers originated in 1873 when four young men shared a dream to start a football club without money, kits or even a ball, yet from such humble beginnings emerged the most famous of all Scottish football clubs and the most successful club trophy wise in the world.
Rangers have won 51 Premier League titles in Scotland, 31 Scottish Cups, 24 Scottish League Cups and they also won the European Cup Winners Cup in 1972 which is their only trophy in Europe to date. They have had 12 managers in their history, most notable being Walter Smith who guided Rangers to 9 Premier League titles in row.
Nowadays Rangers are going through a transitional period. They have just brought back Walter Smith for his second spell in charge. He has made a few signings over the Summer and the team will take time to gel. We have made quite a good start to the season and I’m sure we will get better. The Captain of the club at the moment is Barry Ferguson who is probably the best Scottish player for many years to have come of the club.
In the future it has to be priority for Rangers to win a European tournament as they have only ever won one tournament in Europe and that was over 36 years ago. I don’t think it will happen anytime soon as we don’t have a team capable of it, but a few years ago we invested in a state of the art training facility called Murray Park. I am hoping in the future that this will breed world class player from the youth team that are capable of competing against the best teams in Europe.
As long as I live I will support Rangers and I hope if I ever have children that I can take them to Ibrox Stadium to watch in my eyes, the best team in the world.
