The Blue Dress by Betty Lorimer
The Plaza immediately calls up the vision of the blue dress. This hung in my aunt’s wardrobe in Barrhead in the thirties. A beautiful, beautiful blue net ball-gown, deepest blue in parts. I was about 5 years of age when I saw it first lying on the bed ready for a night at The Plaza. Uncle George was a naval officer and she was smallish. They would make a handsome couple. She was a classy dresser and with the bits of jewellery she possessed, and this wonderful gown, they must have looked a million dollars. That was the heyday of The Plaza I would have thought. The dress stayed in the wardrobe after that as far as I know and by the time I was dancing it would have been too small for me. But I always dreamt of how it would look and feel. Swirling about the fountain in front of the band. Aaah, The Plaza.
