Billy Connolly - Portrait of a Lifetime

The People's Palace welcomes a new display in the form of three protraits of the comedian and Glasgow icon, Billy Connolly to mark his 75th birthday in November 2017.

Opened on 15 June 2017, the works are specially created portraits of Billy by artists John Byrne, Jack Vettriano and Rachel Maclean, who recently represented Scotland in the Venice Biennale.

John Byrne has created a portrait of Billy as he is now, while Jack Vettriano's  painting depicts the comedian’s World Tour of Scotland series in 1994, featuring a windblown Billy on a storm-lashed coast near John O’Groats.  Rachel Maclean has created a digital print of Billy - in a specially created outfit, replete with motifs from his career such as ‘mini bike parked in bum’ epaulettes, a sporran with an ‘aged’ nose sprouting hair and make-up reflecting his famous ‘pale blue Scotsman’ joke with representations of Glasgow life past and present in the background.

The new display at the People's Palace conincides with work being carried out across the city as part of Glasgow City Council’s City Centre Mural Trail project which will see the portraits recreated as three indivdual murals more than 16m (50ft) high on buildings at Osbourne Street, Dixon Street and Gallowgate - literally making Billy Connolly part of the architecture of his home city on a major scale.

The work will be showcased, across the country, in a specially commissioned BBC Scotland programme Billy Connolly: Portrait of a Lifetime which was transmitted in June 2017.
