2012 Glasgow Running Network 5k is off and running

02/03/2012
Hundreds of people from across Glasgow are expected to pull on their trainers next month for one of the city’s most popular races, the annual Glasgow Running Network 5k Fun Run, in Bellahouston Park.

Since its launch in 2001 the GRN 5k Fun Run has grown in popularity and last year attracted a record-breaking 780 participants. Entries are now open for this year’s race, which takes place on Sunday 1 April, and organisers are hopeful of a similar number of participants. The GRN 5k is open to males and females over 15 years of age and regularly attracts runners, joggers and walkers.

Among those taking part, is the Chair of Glasgow Life, Councillor George Redmond, who ran the race for the first time in 2011. Councillor Redmond, who joined Louise Morgan of the Glasgow Running Network for a training session in Bellahouston Park today (Thursday, has his sights set on another great day in April.

Councillor Redmond said: “Last year’s 5k fun run was fantastic and showed why it is now as an important part of the Glasgow running calendar. We had a record-number of runners, from first-time runners to those preparing to take part in longer distance races later in the year, including the Ignis Asset Management Women’s 10k and Bank of Scotland Great Scottish Run.

“Last year was my first experience of the GRN 5k fun run, although I have been running the East End 5k since it was launched in 2007. I am really looking forward to getting out there again in April and being part of what is now a fantastic community event enjoyed by hundreds of people.”

Louise Morgan, Physical and Outdoors Activity Officer with the Glasgow Running Network, said: “If previous years are anything to go by then we should be in for a great day out on Sunday 1 April.  Every year we welcome runners, joggers and walkers, making the GRN 5k one of the most inclusive events around and I am sure this year will be no different.”

“There is something for everyone at the GRN 5k. It is open to men and women of all abilities so whether you are an experienced runner or not, so it is the perfect introduction to running and also acts as a training milestone for those with their eye on the summer running season.”

Online entries will close on Sunday 25 March though you can still register to enter right up till race day by calling the race hotline. Entry costs £11, with all Glasgow Running Network and Glasgow Club members receiving a £2 discount. To book your place please visit www.runglasgow.org/GRN or telephone 0141 287 5079. All finishers will be given a recorded time, a t-shirt, medal and goody bag. On the day registration, costing £15, will also be available.
