Beach volleyball comes to Riverside Museum

Some of Scotland's top volleyball players are set to take the court outside the stunning new Riverside Museum this Saturday (30 July) for the 2011 Riverside Beach Volleyball Masters.
Glasgow Life has teamed up with the SVA Beach Commission to host the competition as part of a summer-long series of events to mark the opening of the £74million Riverside Museum. An incredible 175 tonnes of sand is being used to create a fully accredited 20m x 12m beach volleyball court outside the main entrance of the museum.
The bold move will see Scotland’s leading volleyball stars including Cathy Smy, Shelley Paterson, Alan Krawczyk and Ryan MacLeod go head to head over the course of the day. The women’s competition takes place between 10am and 1pm, with the men’s event between 2pm and 5pm. The SVA Beach Commission is running a come and try session for anyone under the age of 16 between 1pm and 2pm. If you wish to attend, just turn up on the day and be ready to play.
Chair of Glasgow Life, Councillor George Redmond, said: “The Riverside Museum has already established itself as one of Scotland’s top visitor attractions through its world-class collection and exciting events programme. I am sure the Beach Volleyball Masters will help attract even more people down on Saturday, when sport will meet culture on the banks of the River Clyde.”
Chief Executive of Scottish Volleyball, Margaret Ann Fleming, said: “This is a fantastic and wonderful opportunity for Scottish Volleyball to showcase beach volleyball in the heart of Glasgow. Glasgow Life is a long-time supporter of volleyball both indoor and beach and we are inspired to be partnering the Riverside Museum through this summer’s launch of Glasgow’s newest facility.”
