Creative Cities date for Glasgow quartet Square One

An emerging Glasgow-based Jazz quartet will be performing two shows in Poland this month supported by Glasgow Music and the UNESCO Creative Cities Network.

Square One will take to the stage at the Silesian Jazz Festival in Katowice on Friday 9. December and Harris Piano Jazz Barr in Krakow on Saturday 10 December.

Featuring Royal Conservatoire of Scotland graduates Joe Williamson on guitar, Peter Johnstone on piano, David Bowden on double bass and Stephen Henderson on drums, Square One are known for their free spirited original music and energised live performances. Their debut album, In Motion, was released in October 2016.

The UNESCO Creative Cities Network was created in 2004 to promote cooperation with and among cities that have identified creativity as a strategic factor for sustainable urban development. The 116 cities which currently make up this network work together towards a common objective: placing creativity and cultural industries at the heart of their development plans at the local level and cooperating actively at the international level.

The quartet’s polish dates resulted from an approach by UNESCO Creative Cities Network to Glasgow Music to recommend artists to appear on the UNESCO stage at the Silesian Jazz Festival. In addition to putting the band forward Glasgow Music is supporting the performances through paying the artist’s fees.

Joe Williamson of Square One said: “''We're delighted to be have been recommended to perform at the Silesian Jazz Festival. We love it in Poland, there's such a vibrant music scene - it'll be great to fly the flag for Scottish Jazz!''

Councillor Archie Graham, OBE, Chair of Glasgow Life, said: “Glasgow is a hotbed of creativity and home to an exciting range of developing musical talent. This is a fantastic opportunity, created through working as part of UNSECO Creative Cities Network, for Polish audiences to enjoy home grown talent from Glasgow and for the quartet to continue to grow their reputation on the international stage.”
