Curling comes to George Square for Glasgow's Hogmanay

14/12/2010
Organisers of the 2010 Glasgow’s Hogmanay in association with Diageo celebrations will today announce further programme details for what is again proving to be one of the hottest tickets in town.

As well as dancing through the bells to some of the best known Celtic bands, revellers at this year’s spectacular open-air New Year ceilidh in George Square will also be able to take part in a number of family-friendly activities as the city’s Hogmanay party returns with a traditional theme.

Glasgow Life has teamed up with the Royal Caledonian Curling Club to give party goers the chance to try out one of Scotland’s national sports on the ice in George Square. There will also be a kids zone with Scottish themed arts and crafts, face painting and storytelling and games consoles and gadgets for teenagers.

Acts already confirmed for Glasgow’s Hogmanay in association with Diageo include Capercaillie, Skerryvore, Salsa Celtica, The Black Rose Ceilidh band and the Williamwood Pipe Band. The spectacular “midnight moment” will see thousands of fireworks set off from the roof of the City Chambers.

Tickets for this event are priced at £19 for adults, £9 for children with a family ticket of 2 adults and 2 children costing £50. Tickets are available at www.glasgowloveschristmas.com or can be booked in person at the Ticketsoup box office at the SECC or by phoning 0141 564 4220.

Glasgow’s Lord Provost Bob Winter said: "Glasgow's Hogmanay celebrations in George Square is always one of the hottest tickets in town. This year's traditional theme will see revellers from all around the world enjoy a superb open air ceilidh and a range of family friendly activities such as curling on the ever popular ice rink. Once again it promises to be a sensational way to welcome in the New Year."

Royal Caledonian Curling Club Development Manager Judith McFarlane said: “We are delighted to become involved in Glasgow's Hogmanay celebrations for the first time. This event will give people the opportunity to come along and try one of Scotland's national sports, on the evening of one of Scotland's biggest parties."
