Encontro Festival Showcase brings Carnival to Merchant City

Summer in the city brings a certain carnival atmosphere which is at the heart of the Merchant City Festival this summer.

The Encontro Festival Showcase celebrates contemporary UK carnival culture with a huge and joyous gig at the Old Fruitmarket!

Taking centre stage are a selection of the UK’s most exciting carnival bands each performing a high energy, superbly crafted show.

Tickets for this event are available via www.merchantcityfestival.com
Blending Brazilian-inspired rhythms with ska, drum ‘n’ bass, hip hop, dub reggae and Cuban flavours, hosts SambaYaBamba add horns, dancers and a good dose of Glasgow sass to their riotous live shows. Juba do Leao are a powerhouse of Pernambucan drums, song and dance from Manchester proudly telling the Maracatu story, they recreate the music of North East Brazil with killer percussion, creative choreography and a cheeky twist.

val Transatlantico unite talented players of Rio samba from across the UK and beyond - the true sound of Rio “Carnaval” brought to you with passion, authenticity and unrivalled creative flair.

Joining them all is Orkestra del Sol, Scotland’s answer to the celebratory wedding bands of Eastern Europe crossed with the marching street bands of Mardi Gras, who are a force of bombastic brass, theatrical flair and roguish humour.

Lorenzo Mele, Executive Producer of the Merchant City Festival said: “Come and see some of the best samba bands performing at the iconic Old Fruitmarket and you can expect an unforgettable occasion that promises a big night and big rhythms!”
