Field Marshal Montgomery crowned WPB Champions 2012

Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band have been crowned World Pipe Band Champions at Glasgow Green this afternoon in front of an estimated crowd of 35,000 people. The runners up were Scottish Power with third place going to Simon Fraser University. The event, which has been associated with Glasgow for more than 60 years, drew people from all over the world to see 8,000 of the very best pipers and drummers compete.

This year 235 bands were due at Glasgow Green for the World Pipe Band Championships. Performances started early this morning with the newly crowned World Champions being announced after more than 9 hours of fierce competition.

Next year, The Worlds becomes a 2 day event running on the 17th and 18th of August.

The Worlds ended with the amazing spectacle of the thousands of pipers and drummers who had been competing throughout the day taking part in a march past before the world champions were crowned in front of tens of thousands of people.  Glasgow Green also played host to some of the strongest men in the world in a World Highland Games.

The Chieftain of the World Pipe Band Championships, Glasgow’s Lord Provost Sadie Docherty said: “The Worlds is a cornerstone of our cultural calendar that Glaswegians look forward to every year. I’ve always believed that Glasgow Green is never better than when the bands are here competing and we’ve enjoyed some sensational performances. Next year this event will be played out over 2 days giving us an even bigger and better event to look forward to.”

Ian Embelton Chief Executive of the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association said: “Every year the standard of competition is so high but this year we have seen something extra special. Next year the 2 day event will allow us to drive the already vey high standard to new heights and we’ll look forward to welcoming bands back to Glasgow Green for another unforgettable experience.”

Culture Secretary Fiona Hyslop said: “I would like to congratulate Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band, who are worthy World Champions in this, our Year of Creative Scotland. This iconic Glasgow event gets more spectacular year on year, and it is a fantastic way to highlight Scotland’s globally-renowned culture and heritage on an international stage.”
