Glasgow's Christmas Lights tickets released this Saturday

The countdown to Glasgow’s official Christmas celebrations is underway as details of next month’s spectacular Christmas lights switch on are unveiled. Free tickets for the hugely popular Glasgow’s Christmas Lights event in George Square will be released at 9am on Saturday 29 October.

Around 17,500 people will join the Lord Provost of Glasgow, Councillor Bob Winter for the annual Glasgow’s Christmas Lights celebrations on Sunday 20 November. The big switch on marks the start of the festive season with Glasgow’s biggest Christmas party in the shadows of the City Chambers.

Hosted by Clyde 1 with performances from Karen Dunbar, star of Sleeping Beauty at The Kings Theatre, Rock Choir and a very special production of Sleeping Beauty by Scottish Ballet, Glasgow’s Christmas Lights is a spectacular family favourite event not to be missed.

Gates will open at 4.30pm with Clyde 1 taking to the stage at 5.30pm to entertain the excited crowds with an hour-long festive programme of music, comedy and Christmas chat. This year’s Glasgow’s Christmas Lights is being supported by Tesco, who will be offering a range of fantastic discounts as well as a festive competition for revellers.

The Lord Provost will start the countdown to the official switch on of the Christmas lights at 6.30pm, when George Square will be transformed into a Winter Wonderland of stunning fairy lights, seasonal decorations, a towering tree and of course the traditional crib.

The Lord Provost said: “Glasgow’s Christmas Lights is always one of the most sought after tickets around and we are looking forward to another special celebration this year. It marks the start of the festive season in true Glasgow style – a fantastic fun-filled party for all the family.

“Glasgow’s Christmas Lights is always one of the most memorable days of the year. I can’t wait to see the smiles on people’s face when the magic moment comes and George Square is transformed into a magical Winter Wonderland celebrating the joys of Christmas.”

Sleeping Beauty star Karen Dunbar said: “I'm over the moon to be returning to the Kings Theatre for the panto season where I'm playing my favourite, favourite dame. I get to jump around, tell jokes and sing to my heart's content, all in the comfort of pink baseball boots – rare. And, to top it all I get to help switch on the Christmas lights in George Square."

Rock Choir’s appearance at Glasgow’s Christmas Lights will mark be their first major performance in the city. Rock Choir captured the attention of both the BBC and Universal Music in 2009 when, after a breakfast show interview, they were offered their own four-album record deal. They also starred in an ITV1 documentary, "The Choir That Rocks."

Elaine Williamson, Choir Leader of Rock Choir said: “We have performed at some fantastic venues including Wembley but we are all really looking forward to taking the stage in George Square for Glasgow's Christmas Lights. It will be a truly special experience and one that we all can't wait to share with the people of Glasgow.”

Tesco Parkhead Forge Extra store manager Neil Conway said: “Our new store at the Forge Retail Park is set to open on 14th November and as part of our opening celebrations my team and I wanted to support this fantastic family event, which is truly at the heart of Glasgow.”

Glasgow’s Christmas Lights forms part of the Glasgow Loves Christmas campaign. It incorporates Glasgow's unrivalled shopping offer and celebrated style mile as well as a programme of festive events all taking place at the city's famous and much-loved George Square, and throughout the city.

Entry is by free ticket only. Each ticket permits access for one person only and all adults, children and babies must have a ticket to gain access to George Square. A maximum of six tickets will be allocated per household. Tickets will be available from the ticketSOUP box office, located at the SECC from 9am on Saturday 29 October.
