A Glasgow sports club is today celebrating a superb double success after it was presented with two prestigious awards on the same night.
Since its formation in September 2010, Sapphire Gymnastics Club has gone from strength to strength growing from an initial four members to 65 today and their success doesn’t stop there. Within the past few weeks it has been announced that they have become the 26th sports club in the city to receive Level 1 Clubmark accreditation from Glasgow Life as well as being named Club of the Month by the Sports Council for Glasgow.
Clubmark is a development tool that allows clubs to be more structured, accessible and organised. It aims to recognise, reward and accredit sports clubs in Glasgow that are fully committed to providing a safe, effective, inclusive and fun environment for all but especially children and young people. It is rightly regarded as a stamp of quality for any club to demonstrate they have achieved the highest standards.
The Club of the Month award comes in recognition of Sapphire’s excellent work with young people and sees the club receive a grant that will allow them to continue their development.
Chair of Sapphire Gymnastics Club, Catriona Lessani, said: “Clubmark is a great guideline for new clubs and we are delighted to have completed the first stage of the process. It provides a real vision of how a club should be run and although it may seem a daunting process for some, if your club is run well a lot of it comes as second nature.
“We started with just four members and had four classes on each week. We now have over 60 members and 12 classes and have kids coming from as far as Coatbridge and Bearsden. We have a voluntary management committee who look after the direction of the club and really importantly for us the coaches, gymnasts and committee all work together.
"We are absolutely ecstatic that we have received Clubmark and won Club of the Month. It has given us a massive boost and shown us that we going in the right direction."
Chair of Glasgow Life, Councillor George Redmond, said: “Club Mark accreditation is a fantastic mechanism to help sports clubs operate effectively in a number of areas. But just as importantly it gives parents and guardians peace of mind by demonstrating the club’s commitment to meeting tough standards in areas such as child protection and equality.”
“Sapphire Gymnastics Club deserve enormous credit for embarking on the Clubmark process and showing that their dedication to first-class performance does not just start and finish in the gym but also in how it operates behind the scenes.”
In order to achieve Clubmark status, sports clubs have to meet rigorous standards in five key areas namely; 1) Sports Equality and Ethics, 2) Protection of Vulnerable Groups and Duty of Care, 3) Club Management, 4) Club Development and Junior Pathways and 4) Coaching, Coaches and Officials.
Clubmark accreditation has three levels, further details of which can be found at www.glasgowlife.org.uk
