Glasgow on Ice prepares for its busiest period

Glasgow on Ice is preparing for its busiest period as the countdown to Christmas prepares to enter its final week.
Including today (Friday 18 December) there are only 13 days remaining in this year’s skating calendar and with demand once again expected to be high, organisers are encouraging the public to book early to avoid disappointment. Sessions are held daily (details on opening times can be found at until Thursday 30 December, with the exception of Christmas day when the rink will be closed.
Glasgow on Ice is one of the largest outdoor rinks in Europe. It is built around the Scott Monument in the very heart of George Square and is one of the most popular attractions in the Glasgow Loves Christmas festival. The rink itself is almost 750 square metres and the ice is approximately 10 to 15 centimetres thick. Up to 80,000 litres of water are needed to form the ice which takes at least 48 hours to freeze completely.
Despite being affected by severe weather earlier in the month it is expected that thousands of people will take to the ice over the coming days to enjoy the ultimate festive skating experience.
Chair of Glasgow Life, Councillor George Redmond, said: "Every year the spectacular ice rink on George Square is one of the city’s best-loved attractions and this year is proving no different. Glasgow on Ice offers a truly unique way to enjoy the Christmas Lights in the shadow of the City Chambers, while skating on one of the largest outdoor rinks in Europe .
“But with the countdown to Christmas day itself well underway and with just under two full weeks till the rink closes for the year on the 30th December, now is the time to pull on your skates to avoid missing out.”
Glasgow on Ice has also teamed up with Di Maggios to bring you a fantastic meal and skate deal until Thursday 23rd December. The exclusive offer represents great value starting from just £15 per adult and £10 per child and includes a two course meal and an off-peak Glasgow on Ice voucher. The offer can be redeemed between 1-9 pm Monday to Wednesday and between 1-4pm on Thursday and Fridays only. Full details at
