The championships will be the first major sporting event to held at the new National Indoor Sports Arena, which is currently under construction ahead of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Molly Rhone IFNA President said. “This will be fantastic for our sport. With Glasgow also hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2014 these two high profile netball events will not only showcase the sport but will also promote long term development and leave a lasting legacy not just in Scotland but across the whole region of Europe.”
Councillor Archie Graham, the Deputy Leader of Glasgow City Council and the Executive Member for the Commonwealth Games, said: “This is fantastic news for Glasgow and again confirms our position as a leading venue for international sporting events. Our record in delivering these events is second to none and I am sure the World Youth Netball Championships in 2013 will be another superb success story for not only Glasgow but for world netball.
“This will be the first major competition to be held at the city’s new National Indoor Sports Arena, which will of course play a central role in the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. Championships such as these give us the perfect opportunity to again showcase the city as a centre of sport excellence in the lead up to the 2014 Games. We are looking forward to giving the netball players from across the world a true Glasgow welcome in 2013."
Patricia Osborne Chair of Netball Scotland said. "To be confirmed as the host of the World Youth Netball championships in Glasgow in 2013 is both thrilling and welcome news. The netball community will embrace the championship, and the event will raise the profile of netball in Scotland prior to the 2014 Commonwealth Games, and help build Netball Scotland’s participant, volunteer and spectator base. I know that the people of Glasgow and Scotland will provide a wonderful welcome to the teams and fans from all around the world."
Paul Bush OBE, Chief Operating Officer of EventScotland said, “EventScotland are delighted to be supporting Glasgow in hosting the World Youth Netball Championships in 2013. This will be the first World Championship to be held in the National Indoor Sports Arena so it will be a wonderful launch pad for this facility. The championships will set the scene for the wonderful events that will follow in that venue before, during and after Glasgow 2014.
Netball is one the highest participation sports for females across the world and will attract a global audience through the media but also bring to Glasgow and Scotland a large number of visitors which will bring significant economic impact. We have the opportunity to showcase our expertise in staging world class events and hope that a new wave of enthusiasts will join in the excitement when international netball returns to Glasgow as one of the core sports in the Commonwealth Games. ”
