Cinderella the perfect fit for this year's festive show

24/11/2015
The stage is set, the lights are lit and the cast of this year’s all-singing, all-dancing community pantomime are ready to go to the ball – oh yes they are!

This year, Glasgow Arts is taking the original rags to riches tale Cinderella on the road, bringing the most popular of all Christmas fairy-tales to community venues across Glasgow. Part of the exciting Glasgow Loves Christmas campaign, this uniquely Glaswegian take on Cinderella, based on a Macrobert Arts Centre Commission, promises to sprinkle some panto magic across the city with plenty of thrills, spills, wicked tricks, fantastic sets and a fabulous star-studded cast.

Taking a breather from their hectic rehearsal schedule the cast, including Charlene Boyd’s Cinderella, donned their colourful costumes and descended on Frasers, Buchanan Street, giving excited shoppers the chance to see whose foot would fit the dainty 'glass slipper' ahead of curtain up on Tuesday, 1st December.

Fighting off other would-be princesses, Ugly Sister Fifi, played by Steven Rae, tried in vain to squeeze her gigantic foot into the dainty glass slipper. But, as the story goes, there is only one foot that the slipper will fit.

Councillor Archie Graham, Chair of Glasgow Life, said: “Christmas is a time for families, fun and laughter and I can think of no better way to celebrate the joy of the festive season than by coming together to enjoy this wonderful Christmas pantomime.

“I’m delighted that we are able to bring this magical fairytale to the very heart of communities across Glasgow, and with tickets from £2 it offers great value for money. This fantastic production offers a wonderful opportunity to introduce young Glaswegians to the arts and I would encourage everyone to come and see if a touch of magic will help Ella and her Prince Charming go to the ball.”

Scripted by Johnny McKnight and directed by Bill Wright, the production is a modern take on the well-known tale which sees romantic Cinderella – known as Ella – desperate to escape her wicked Step Mother Madame De’mon and her outrageous Ugly Sisters, Fifi and Foufou.

Complete with a whole host of ‘oh yes he did, oh no he didn’ts’, and boos and hisses galore, the fairest pantomime of them all promises to sprinkle magic over the city as Glaswegians dust off their ball gowns and polish their pumpkins ready for the fun-filled family event jam-packed with singing, dancing and laughter.

Will Ella make it to the ball, meet her prince and live happily ever after? Or will she forever remain at the beck and call of her wicked step-mother the evil Madame De’mon and two of the nastiest and ugliest sisters Glasgow audiences have ever seen?

Director Bill Wright hopes that Glasgow audiences will take the shows main characters to their hearts.  Commenting on the show, Bill said: “It has been a joy working with this talented group to bring Cinderella to community venues across Glasgow. It is always important to have an affordable and family friendly panto accessible to people and this is going to be a great night out!”

The magical story of Cinderella, one of the all-time classics, is brought to life by a fabulous cast of Scotland’s finest.

Alongside Charlene Boyd as Cinderella is well-known Scots actor Maureen Carr, as Cinderella’s wicked stepmother Madame De’mon whose TV credits include Still Game, Merlin and Taggart.

Ashley Smith, who you may recognise from Scotsquad, plays romantic Prince Charming alongside Buttons, brought to life by the talented Gavin Wright.

The community tour kicks off at Barmulloch Community Centre on Tuesday, 1st December and visits fourteen other community venues from Drumchapel to Barlanark until Saturday, 19th December.

So, what are you waiting for? Why not pop on your glass slippers, hop in to your pumpkin and whisk the whole family along to the panto this Christmas.
