The Pull of the Pool

Are you a Glasgow Club gym or fitness class fanatic? If you are then you’re no doubt feeling the benefit in your everyday life.
 
But did you know that your Glasgow Club membership gets you access to all our swimming pools too?
 
As well as being a fun and relaxing activity, swimming can also offer you a serious training regime. You only have to look at our Olympic swimming hopefuls to see how ripped they are! This will come as no surprise when you realise that water is 800 times denser than air.
 
With so many different strokes you can target just about ever muscle in your body.
 
For example the freestyle or front craw works the following:
 
  • Hand muscles
  • Forearms
  • Shoulder muscles
  • Neck muscles
  • Chest muscles
  • Abdominal muscles
  • Back muscles
  • Bum muscles
  • Groin Muscles
  • Calf
  • Shin
  • Foot
  • Front Upper leg
  • Back Upper leg
 
Other strokes include breast stroke, butterfly and backstroke. And if you want to try something a little bit different you could always try aqua running. As the name suggests this simulates running in the water. It’s more effective if you use a flotation belt to ensure you keep good form. 
 
An interesting fact is that your heart rate will be approximately 13-15% lower in the water than when exercising out of it. Don’t worry, this doesn’t mean you are not working as hard.  (Its actually due to the hydrostatic pressure surrounding the body, which increases venous return of blood to the heart, and stroke volume. This requires fewer beats per minute from the heart.) But that enough of the technical stuff!! Let’s just say swimming is one of the best forms of exercise you can do. So take the plunge.
