Coach Core 2016/17

What is Coach Core? 


Coach Core is a full-time, year-long leadership, training and employability programme that focuses predominantly on young people living in Glasgow and aged 16 – 21 year olds who are not in education, training or employment. 


Since launching in 2013 in partnership with The Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry, 100% of participants (40 in total) have made positive progressions into employment and/ or further education with another 20 on the current cohort due to complete in August 2017.

What's Involved?


Coach Core: Provides opportunities for young people engaged in sport who are not in higher education, taking up employment or in training.  Provides young people with the learning, qualifications and vocational training required by employers.  Inspires young people to engage in sports coaching.  Enables young people to reach their full potential.   

Coach Core apprentices work a 30 hour a week contract, 15 hours of which is an individually tailored work programme to suit their interests. Apprentices assist the delivery of sports within schools, at community sports clubs, Glasgow Sport's own programmes and at local and city-wide events.

Apprentices also come together on a bi-weekly basis to learn new skills, receive mentoring and be trained through various recognised qualifications and workshops including an SVQ level 2 in Sports Coaching (SCQF level 6).



  • Live within the Glasgow City Council boundary or have a Clyde Gateway postcode
  • Not already be in further education, employment or training.
  • Be aged 16 – 21 years old on initial application.
  • Be available to participate in the full 5 week Misspelled WordPreCoach Core employability programme from October 2017.
  • Be nominated by someone who can provide information for you in a learning / working / voluntary setting. 
  • Demonstrate an enthusiasm for sport.
  • Be available to complete paid employment of 30 hours a week for a full year between November 2017 and November 2018.

Please note: Applicants do not require any formal qualifications to apply for Coach Core. Applicants should not have already completed the SQA Certificate of Work Readiness. Please see application pack and FAQs for more information.
