Emirates Arena and the Commonwealth Games

Emirates Arena and the Commonwealth Games
2014 promises to be a fantastic year for Glasgow as we get ready to host the Commonwealth Games. Since winning the bid in 2007 there has been a lot of work right across the city in preparation for the visit of some of the world’s finest athletes.

The Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games has already been great news for the city.  There’s been around £200 million worth of investment in fitness facilities across the city, and Glasgow has played host to some amazing sporting events. This year, the city has a chance to shine on a global stage like never before.

The £113 million Emirates Arena and Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome was built for the people of Glasgow with significant investment from Glasgow City Council and support from Sportscotland. The venue has Scotland’s only indoor velodrome, a 6000 seat arena, 12 badminton courts, an 80 piece gym, 3 dance studios and 4 football pitches. It really is the jewel in Glasgow’s sporting crown.

The Emirates Arena will be the venue for the badminton and track cycling events at the Games and as such we plan to make some changes to help you continue your healthy lifestyle with Glasgow Sport. The timeline below details the potential closures and then what it means for your activities.

What does this mean for me?

Glasgow Club Members

It’s really important to us that you can stay active and feel great and when there is a temporary change to things, most Glasgow Club members find they're better off with us because we're more flexible than any other club and better equipped to support you.

As a Glasgow Club member you’ll find one of our other 19 other gyms across the city is near home or work so you can still fit your workout into your busy day. What’s more, we’re opening two Super Gyms (at Gorbals in January 2014 and at Bellahouston in June 2014) so there will be access to all the kit and expertise you need to have a great workout and leave the gym with a smile.

If the studio at your favourite Glasgow Club centre is affected, you won't miss out! We’ll be continuing to run an exciting and varied timetable at another venue nearby and launching new classes. The new fitness class timetables will be on site and online at the end of March as usual and this will give you all the details of your favourite classes.

We are planning to move the majority of our fitness classes to a number of venues nearby including:
- Glasgow Club Gorbals
- Glasgow Club Crownpoint
- Glasgow Club Whitehill

Children’s Sports Classes

Our children’s coaching programme is very important to us. For our football and gymnastics programmes the second block of the year, the spring block, will follow immediately on from the first block and so will finish on 31st May. This should give your little athletes plenty of time to get excited about the Games.

The post summer block will start at the Emirates Arena on the 31st August (and will commence on the 10th August in other non-Games venues).

Our Athletics and Badminton courses, including their summer programmes (which will be detailed in our holiday brochure) will move to Glasgow Club Crownpoint and Glasgow Club Gorbals respectively. Our cycling programme will resume when the venue opens again in August.

Adult Sports Classes

Our cycling programme will stop when the venue closes and restart as soon as we can when we’re open in August.

Regular Lets

If you have a regular let with us; a game of fives; a regular game of badminton; a sports club booking then, as you know, we are making every effort to find you an alternative venue for the period of the Games. More news to follow in the New Year.
