Commonwealth Games medal hopeful Amy Regan officially open Glasgow’s biggest gym today (Tuesday, June 17).

The Team Scotland gymnast unveiled the new 'SuperGym' at Glasgow Club Bellahouston, which has been specially created to keep Glaswegians active during the Commonwealth Games. As the city prepares to welcome the world in five weeks’ time, Glasgow Club will temporarily hand over seven of its venues to be used for competition events during the Glasgow 2014 Games.

The opening of the expanded training area at Bellahouston, along with a SuperGym previously created at Gorbals, will ensure fitness enthusiasts can maintain their exercise regimes while their usual facilities are unavailable. The mammoth Bellahouston site is packed with the latest Technogym equipment and covers over 1000²m.

Four times Scottish senior gymnastics champion Amy Regan - one of Team Scotland's top medal hopes for Glasgow 2014 - has used the gym facilities at Bellahouston for around five years. The 19-year-old was first to try out some of the new equipment in the SuperGym this morning.
Amy said: “I use the Glasgow Club Bellahouston gym three times a week, usually doing 30 minutes to an hour, for cardiovascular training. It’s a great gym and the staff are really nice.
“I’m glad to see it’s being made even bigger and better as it’s important that people can carry on with their fitness routines during the Commonwealth Games. The Games will also inspire more people to take up sport and improve their health and fitness, so facilities like the new SuperGym will help them achieve that.
“I’m going to an amazing summer of sport in Glasgow. My training is going really well and I’m staying completely focused to have the best chance of winning a medal.”

The Bellahouston site is officially the largest gym in the city, slightly bigger than the gym at Glasgow Club Scotstoun. The SuperGym has been filled with state-of-the-art equipment on two floors. The venue already boasted a top class upstairs training area, with a 550²m space featuring fixed resistance machines, functional Kinesis stations, free weights, barbells, dumbbells and a functional training balcony.

A second gym area has now been added downstairs, covering 480²m and offering the very latest training equipment. There are an extra 54 cardio machines, 7 more Kinesis stations, and a range of dumbbells, barbells and extra workout equipment to choose from.

Councillor Archie Graham, Chair of Glasgow Life and Executive Member for the Commonwealth Games, said: “We are excited to be opening our second SuperGym in the city to ensure customers can maintain their exercise regimes throughout the summer. The SuperGym at Gorbals has proved extremely popular since it opened in January, and I expect thousands will also take advantage of the fantastic facilities at Bellahouston.”
