At the beginning of the school summer holidays, Willie Cameron (ex Great Britain and Scotland basketball star) hosted a development camp for under 16 boys and girls at Eastbank Academy, Shettleston through his charity ‘Shoot for Success’ and in association with Glasgow City Basketball Club which he helped found. Willie continues to provide opportunities for all to experience the excitement and fun of participation in the sport of basketball even into his retirement years. The camps hold particular significance for Willie as he holds them in memory of his friend and Scottish Basketball Legend James ‘Mick’ McKechnie.
This year’s Summer Camp took its usual format with Monday 30th June & Tuesday 1st July (10am-3pm) being devoted to Under 12 boys and girls and Wednesday 2nd July, Thursday 3rd July and Friday 4th July (10am-3:30pm) given over to those aged 12 to 16. In keeping true to the Shoot for Success ethos of ‘basketball for all’, the price was kept at an affordable £3:00 per day.
During the course of the week, 55 young people were put through their paces with the emphasis firmly placed on the fundamentals of the game, particularly ‘good footwork’. The afternoon sessions featured a recap on these skills before concentrating on games to allow the young people to display their newly acquired and developing skills. They also received instruction on proper hydration and good nutrition, which proved to be of the utmost importance as it was brought to the fore after a couple of “I’m feeling faint” episodes!
The enthusiasm of the participants was tangible and delighted the coaches but equally pleasing was that a large percentage of the young people had no previous experience of Club Basketball and demonstrated enthusiasm for learning and developing new skills.
