October 2012

SUMMER is over for another year and what a sporting summer it was! The most successful Olympics ever captured the nation’s interest, producing the most medals ever recorded for Scottish athletes. The Paralympics has also been a huge success, highlighting what sport can do to inspire a nation.

The outstanding comeback from Team Europe in the Ryder Cup was another inspiration and Andy Murray’s emphatic victory in the US Open really has put sport on the map worldwide.  The excitement from London 2012 now propels us towards the Commonwealth Games in 2014, where the sporting limelight will shift to Glasgow.

All of us here at Glasgow Sport have certainly been inspired through the move from Trongate to the Emirates Arena and Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome. An exciting future is ahead, not only at Glasgow Sport but for the people of Glasgow who will benefit from the long lasting legacy the brand new facility will provide. The facility opened to the public on the 6th of October and provides massive opportunities to both performance and community sport.

If the Olympic bug has bitten you, Glasgow Sport has on offer an extensive number of programmes across many sports from Swimming to Football and Basketball to Gymnastics. On top of the sporting activity on hand, Glasgow Sport also offers opportunities to get involved in any form of physical activity, a fantastic example of this is the Big Fit Walk at Glasgow Green and the Can Move Programme.
